Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash Statistics
Some of California’s most dangerous motor vehicle accidents are single-vehicle accidents, but many drivers are unaware of this.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 62% of all fatal car accidents in California involve only one vehicle. Drivers in California, where single-vehicle accidents are all too common, need to be aware of the many contributing factors.
A single-vehicle collision can occur for a variety of reasons. A run-off-the-road accident occurs when a driver loses control while speeding or making sharp turns on a wet, slick road. It is possible to find debris on the road, such as a large branch or an object that fell from the back of a truck.
An uninsured motorist accident caused by, say, a deer jumping in front of your car will have fewer resources available to you because of the comprehensive insurance coverage provided by your policy.
Orange County Car Accident Lawyers
Many car accident victims are unable to return to work or school as a result of the injuries they sustained in the accident. Even if a victim dies as a result of a negligent driver’s actions, that person is still held accountable. The surviving family members of the victim can file wrongful death lawsuits against the driver who was negligent and as a result, caused the victim’s death (or legal heirs).
For them, the process of reliving their losses and grief is a painful one. Depositions and trials force victims to testify about their losses in front of strangers. Dealing with the stress of a long-term legal matter can have a negative impact on one’s mental health.
It is critical to hold negligent drivers accountable if they cause an accident. Accountability is critical in cases where negligence results in an excessive death toll. While wrongful death claims can be emotionally draining, they can also provide some closure for grieving families. This is good news for everyone who drives in California.
