Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
A motorcycle rider is 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to die in a collision than an automobile passenger.
In Los Angeles, riding a motorcycle is a great way to enjoy the city’s mild weather. Because of our mild climate, riders don’t have to worry about the weather changing with the seasons. Motorcycle riding can be done year-round if there isn’t too much precipitation, such as rain, snow, or ice.
As a result, the number of motorcycles on the road is always high. Combined with LA’s notoriously congested streets, this can be a recipe for disaster. When there is a lot of traffic, motorcycle accidents are more likely to occur.
From 2014 to 2018, there were over 200 accidents per year, with an average of 235 accidents per year. According to statistics like these, there are 255 motorcycle accidents in Los Angeles every year.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) recorded 5,014 motorcycle deaths in 2019. There had been a decline in motorcycle fatalities since the early 1980s, but they began to rise again in 1998 and remained so until 2008.
Motorcyclists are 16 times more likely to be injured or killed in an accident than car passengers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Motorists failing to see a motorcycle at an intersection account for nearly 70% of all traffic accidents. Motorcycle accidents are frequently caused by a lack of visibility from other vehicles.
It’s possible to avoid a fatal motorcycle accident, however. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of serious head injuries, according to studies. The use of motorcycle helmets could save 37% of lives.
