A California Highway Patrol officer reported that the driver of the silver Nissan Sentra, a 23-year-old Los Angeles resident, was struck from behind by a dark-colored SUV.
The SUV fled as the Nissan overturned into the highway’s right shoulder.
The car’s driver received assistance from police and paramedics, and she was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.
It’s unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
According to officials, the vehicle that fled had a tire cover with a skull-and-bones design.
The crash remains under investigation.
Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Escaping the scene of an accident is against the law. There is a hit-and-run accident in the United States every day. At least 2,000 people in the United States have been killed in hit-and-run incidents since 2006.
There has been a rise in the frequency of accidents involving hit-and-run drivers. Since 2009, the number of deaths attributable to hit-and-run drivers has risen by 7 percent. The number of unintentional fatalities on the roads is growing, and a major contributing factor is an increase in hit-and-run accidents.
More people were killed in hit-and-run accidents in California than in any other state in this period. The state of California alone accounted for over 20% of all traffic fatalities in the United States in 2012, with 3,056 people losing their lives in 2,948 separate accidents.
Suffering serious injuries in a car crash can be a terrifying experience. When the other driver refuses to stop and accept responsibility, the consequences can be even more devastating.
Because they are drunk, driving illegally, or afraid of arrest, these people are more likely to flee the scene of an accident.
