Six people were injured, with two people in critical condition after a multi-vehicle crash in Carson on Tuesday morning, February 9.
The accident transpired at approximately 8:10 p.m. on the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway, north of 223rd Street, near the Carson Street exit.
A GMC pickup truck was stopped on the right side of the freeway. It attempted to re-enter traffic slowly but was later rear-ended by a Lexus sedan. The collision caused the GMC to hit a Peterbilt semi.
Another collision later occurred. A Ford Mustang hit a Honda Prelude that was stopped on the freeway due to the first collision. Due to the severity of the crash, one of the vehicles lost control and struck a Kia Soul.
A total of six people were injured as a result of the collision. The Prelude driver and his passenger were rushed to Harbor UCLA Medical Center with serious injuries. Four others were injured and treated on the scene.
Local authorities are currently investigating the case.
Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
Car accidents in the U.S. happen more often than you think. According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, a car accident occurs every 60 seconds. This means approximately 5.25 million car accidents occur every year throughout the country.
Tens of thousands of drivers and passengers lose their lives each year due to crashes. According to the United States Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), there were 33,654 fatal vehicle crashes in 2018, which caused 36,560 deaths.
Multi-vehicle collisions are just one type of car accident. It usually involves three or more vehicles. A “chain-reaction commonly causes this type of accident,” wherein one car will bump into another, which will cause the other vehicle to crash into another one potentially.
These accidents commonly occur due to reckless drivers, speeding, drunk drivers, and distracted drivers.
