One person was killed while two others were hurt after a multi-vehicle collision in Salinas on Thursday afternoon, October 21.
The major collision transpired at approximately 1:11 p.m. at the intersection of W. Blanco Road and Armstrong Road. A Nissan Altima attempted to pass a white Chevrolet Camaro when the Nissan rear-ended a black 2014 Nissan Pathfinder SUV for unclear reasons. A silver 4-door 2012 Honda Accord also collided with the vehicles.
Because of the force of the collision, the Nissan Altima flipped over and came to rest on its side, while the SUV sustained significant-top damage. The Nissan Altima driver sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, two other people were injured in the mishap and were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Their condition and identities have not been disclosed. The California Highway Patrol is further investigating the cause of the collision. They will attempt to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
A multi-vehicle accident occurs when three or more vehicles crash on the road. When two cars collide, it’s called a “chain reaction” and could lead to yet another collision with other cars on the road. Accidents in the car have the potential to be both life-altering and disastrous.
Because car accidents are so common in our lives, most drivers do not realize just how hazardous they have become. Car accidents in the United States result in millions of injuries and tens of thousands of deaths each year. According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation, 33,654 people died in car accidents in 2018.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, California has one of the highest rates of traffic collisions each year. Many car accidents are preventable, such as inattentive driving, speeding, traffic violations, driving while intoxicated, and following too closely behind another vehicle, among other things. Automobile accidents are also caused, but to a lesser extent, by other factors like severe weather and sloppy road conditions.
