In America, the answer to which state has the worst reputation changes every year. The numbers are high. America is considered to have one of the highest car accident rates in the world. In 2019, there were a total of 36,096 fatalities on American roads as a result of car accidents.
Those car accidents led to approximately 4.4 million personal injuries that needed medical attention. These collisions cost the United States over $871 billion every year, with only $380 million connected to medical bills. In addition to the devastating losses to tens of thousands of families every year, the country pays dearly for the tragedies of lost wages and the mental anguish of car accidents.

Car Accident Fatalities By State
The state with the highest number of fatalities due to car accidents will vary every year. It is generally known that states with more people and roads will experience more car accidents and fatalities annually. Urban areas will also have more dangerous roads and more dangerous driving conditions. Nevertheless, car accident lawyers representing victims may not consider road conditions as a sufficient excuse, as drivers are generally expected to adapt their driving to the circumstances.
We also see correlations between the states with the highest numbers of fatalities and high DUI rates as well. In 2019, Texas had more car accidents than any other state in the United States. It also had the most DUIs and fatalities by DUIs.
The top 10 states for car accidents in 2019 were:
- Texas — 3,294 crashes and 3,615 fatalities.
- California — 3,316 crashes and 3,606 fatalities.
- Florida — 2,950 crashes and 3,183 fatalities.
- Georgia — 1,377 crashes and 1,491 fatalities.
- North Carolina — 1,284 crashes and 1,373 fatalities.
- Tennessee — 1,040 crashes and 1,135 fatalities.
- Ohio — 1,039 crashes and 1,153 fatalities.
- Pennsylvania — 990 crashes and 1,059 fatalities.
- South Carolina — 922 crashes and 1,001 fatalities.
- Arizona — 910 crashes and 981 fatalities.
The states with the lowest number of car accidents and fatalities were:
- Washington, D.C. — 22 crashes and 23 fatalities.
- Vermont — 44 crashes and 47 fatalities.
- Rhode Island — 53 crashes and 57 fatalities.
- Alaska — 62 crashes and 67 fatalities.
- South Dakota — 88 crashes and 102 fatalities.
Other facts that connect to car accidents by the state include the types of accidents that happened. Alaska is home to the highest percentage of accidents involving large vehicles (such as SUVs and pickup trucks) that resulted in fatalities. At the same time, Alaska has one of the lowest numbers of accidents involving cars.
Vermont has opposite numbers, with a high percentage of accidents related to fatalities involving cars, but a low percentage of deaths of all accidents involving SUVs and pickup trucks. Hawaii has a low number of fatalities with any kind of vehicle but a high percentage of accidents that resulted in accidents involving pedestrians. In such cases, personal injury lawyers can advocate for pedestrian accident victims.
Washington, D.C., also has a high percentage of total car accidents resulting in fatalities involving pedestrians. Delaware, New York, and Florida have a high percentage of accidents in car accidents that involve fatalities and bicyclists.
California ranks second on the list of the highest number of car accidents in the United States in 2019. That is an alarming number. It is not just about the state having more people. They are also high on the list of the percentage of car accidents that are DUIs.
If you or someone you love is a DUI accident victim, DUI accident lawyers may be able to help. California DUI accident victim attorneys can represent victims if they decide to file a claim. Generally, they work on a contingency fee basis, which means they only get paid if they obtain compensation on behalf of the victims. However, victims may still be responsible for certain case costs regardless of the outcome. You can ask about this fee structure during your consultation.
DUIs In The United States
Drinking and driving is deadly in the United States, resulting in one American dying every 52 minutes. In 2019, 10,142 Americans died as a result of drinking and driving. Not every DUI fatality was caused by that driver drinking. In some drunk driving fatalities, the responsible driver was another intoxicated motorist who left the scene without injury.
In 2018, there were 1,001,329 arrests for drinking and driving. Drinking and driving is a big problem in every state. Approximately 29 percent of deaths in a car accident in the United States in 2018 were caused by impaired driving. Every one of those fatalities is a wrongful death.
Some research indicates that the north-central section of the United States has the worst record for drinking and driving. Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota have very high DUI rates.
Montana and Wyoming see a high number of fatalities, while the Dakotas see a high number of arrests. Almost half of the traffic fatalities in Montana were caused by drinking and driving.
The states with the deadliest problems are in the south, with Texas and California ranking in the top for drunk driving deaths. The states that are in the northeast have the lowest problems with DUIs. West Virginia and Kentucky have a low number of DUI fatalities, but they have high arrest numbers for DUIs.
The top 3 states with DUI deaths are:
- Texas — 1,439 deaths, accounting for 40 percent of all traffic fatalities.
- California — 1,069 deaths, accounting for 30 percent of all traffic fatalities.
- Montana — 79 deaths, accounting for 43 percent of all traffic fatalities.
The states with the lowest number of DUI fatalities are:
- Kentucky — 137 deaths, accounting for 19 percent of DUI fatalities.
- West Virginia — 57 deaths, accounting for 19 percent of DUI fatalities.
It does not matter where you live. If you have been injured in an accident involving a drunk driver, you may be able to pursue compensation. Consulting with a personal injury lawyer can help you understand your options and protect your interests.
