Fatal Big Rig Crash Statistics
Semi-trucks play a critical role in the economy. Every year, the trucking business in the United States transports billions of dollars worth of commodities. Regrettably, millions of huge rigs on the road pose a hazard to other motorists.
Semi-truck collisions are more fatal than other types of road collisions. A big rig truck’s enormous size makes it difficult for other cars to see it.
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, the fatality rate for large rig vehicles has climbed by 30% since 2009. In 2017, there were 4,102 traffic fatalities involving a big rig.
Various circumstances cause tractor-trailer collisions, including driver weariness, truck loss of control, tire blowouts, disabling or non-disabling vehicle malfunction, excessive speed, lane drifting, and inappropriate truck maneuvering.

In many truck accident cases in California, the truck driver and the trucking company is responsible for the collision. Trucking companies must exercise due care to maintain their vehicles in good condition, hire competent and qualified drivers, and take other reasonable steps to prevent crashes.
The trucking company can be held vicariously liable for the negligence of its drivers and other employees, including cargo loaders.
