Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
In the United States, it is a major crime to cause a car accident and then abandon the scene without rendering aid to the injured parties or calling for help. If police find and arrest the driver, they might face hefty charges and even jail time.
Every day in the United States, one motorist is responsible for an accident and then flees the scene. Almost 2,000 people have died as a direct result of these tragic disasters since 2006. More than sixty percent of the projected fatalities were predicted to be pedestrians.
People who cause accidents are not always willing to help the victims, whether they were injured on foot or in a vehicle. Some drivers have abandoned their vehicles on the shoulder or simply walked away after being pulled over for drunk driving or another traffic crime.
The number of fatalities caused by hit-and-run drivers in California fell by more than half between 2009 and 2016. A total of 3,562 people die in California each year, making it one of the deadliest states in the US.
