Three people were killed and one was hospitalized following a multi-vehicle collision caused by a high-speed pursuit in Lynwood at the South Gate border on Sunday morning, February 05, 2023.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fatal crash involving two cars and three other parked vehicles occurred around 2:10 a.m. at the State Street and Tweedy Boulevard intersection.
Prior to the violent event, South Gate police started pursuing two people in a white Tesla who sped off after being caught in a suspected catalytic converter theft. They began backing off, however, as the chase got increasingly dangerous, with the suspect car going at high speed just before it collided with a vehicle at the intersection.
Two people were immediately killed at the scene, while two others were sent to the hospital, where one was declared dead after arriving. L.A. County Coroner’s Office identified a couple, 60-year-old Flavio B. and Micaela B., both from Compton, among the deceased victims. Micaela was the one declared dead at the hospital.
20-year-old L.A. resident James G., the third deceased person, was one of the occupants of the Tesla, while the driver remained in the hospital in an unknown condition. The crash caused damage to three other parked vehicles on the roadside, with the road covered in car parts and debris from the wreckage.
The pursuit was being reviewed by the Los Angeles Police Department to see whether it was within department policy since police pursuits in the county have frequently resulted in unnecessary injuries and deaths to bystanders. Meanwhile, the investigation was taken over by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives as it occurred between the two cities.
Family and friends did a small memorial to the victims at the site on Sunday night.
