[02-19-2022] Orange County, CA – Officer Killed in a Fatal Newport Beach Plane Crash

A 44-year-old officer identified as Nichola J. V. was killed after a deadly plane crash in Newport Beach on Saturday night, February 19, 2022.

[02-19-2022] Orange County, CA - Officer Killed in a Fatal Newport Beach Plane CrashThe accident happened at approximately 6:00 p.m. near West Balboa Boulevard and 18th Street in Newport Beach.

A police department helicopter was initially responding to a fight in Newport Beach when, for unclear reasons, it crashed into shallow waters.

Two officers were inside the plane; they were extricated by emergency personnel and were both rushed to a nearby trauma center.

Unfortunately, one of the officers was later pronounced dead. He was a 14-year-veteran of the department. The other officer was listed in critical condition but is expected to recover.

The National Transportation Safety Board is further investigating the cause of the crash.
