A multi-car pileup involving as many as eight vehicles shut down all lanes of the westbound 91 Freeway in Cerritos early Friday, March 18, 2022.
The crash occurred around 2:00 a.m. on the westbound 91 Freeway at Bloomfield Avenue.
In the initial collision, two vehicles collided, one of which overturned.
According to the California Highway Patrol, cars that swerved to avoid the crash scene ended up becoming part of it — one vehicle overturned, and others were unable to avoid one of the vehicles in the blacked-out lanes.
The crash scene and debris field were strewn across the entire westbound side, with two vehicles on their roofs, by the time CHP could shut down all westbound lanes.
According to the CHP, a bumper from one of the vehicles involved in the pileup was thrown into the eastbound lanes, forcing other vehicles to swerve to avoid hitting it.
There was one major injury reported, and several people had their injuries assessed. Four tow trucks were dispatched to assist with the cleanup.
All lanes of the freeway had reopened by 3:00 a.m. The cause of the initial crash is unknown.
The crash remains under investigation.
Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
Our major cities, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, are plagued by traffic, which can build up at any time of day or night. Careless drivers who aren’t anticipating heavy traffic can cause harm to themselves and others on the road.
In 2020, there will be 42,357 car accidents in Los Angeles, according to the LAPD. These accidents are believed to have killed at least 238 people.
In this case, a multi-vehicle collision occurred. These collisions are common on highways, where hundreds of vehicles travel at high speeds side by side. This means that many cars approaching an accident will be unable to stop in time safely.
It is estimated that more than 13,000 people are killed in multi-vehicle collisions involving passenger vehicles each year, accounting for more than 40% of all motor vehicle accidents.
