Fatal Head-On Collision Statistics
In a “head-on collision,” the front of one vehicle collides head-on with the front of another. As massive, moving objects clash, head-on collisions are among the most devastating motor vehicle accidents and often result in severe or even fatal injuries.
It is estimated that there are 5 million car accidents each year in the United States alone. Approximately 38,000 individuals die each year as a result. Only 2% of all car accidents are caused by distracted driving, yet they account for 10% of fatalities.
In most cases, a head-on accident happens when a motor vehicle crosses a centerline or a median and collides with another vehicle. Unintentionally or intentionally driving along the wrong side of the road can also result in a head-on accident.
Distracted driving, intoxication, passing on a two-lane road, and sudden lane changes due to construction or stopped traffic are just some of how a head-on collision can occur. Roadway defects, vehicle malfunctions, and excessive speed/loss of control can also lead to head-on collisions.
