Bicycle Accident Statistics

Bicycling has become a common mode of transportation for people traveling short distances. However, there are some hazards that riders must face regularly.

Bicyclists in the United States confront various hazards on the road. The rate of traffic fatalities and injuries in the United States is higher than in most other countries. According to preliminary NHTSA statistics, in 2019, 846 cyclists were killed in road incidents in the United States.

Each year, bikers account for about 2% of all fatalities in motor vehicle incidents in the United States (pedal cyclists). In 2018, 871 bicyclists were killed, the highest number in a single year since 1988.

California has the highest number of bicycling-related deaths per year in the US, according to statistics. According to the National Bicycle Safety Foundation, 145 cyclists were murdered, and 11,116 were injured in California in 2017.

In many of these cases, the driver failed to give the right of way, was unable to check for bikes before pulling out, ran a stop sign or red light, or was otherwise distracted while driving. Driving while texting, driving while intoxicated, or driving irresponsibly might all end in a bicycle crash.
