Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrians are more vulnerable to roadway hazards than passengers in private automobiles. But why are pedestrian accidents more deadly compared to other types of traffic accidents?

Pedestrian accidents differ from other types of accidents in that they provide no protection in the event of an accident. Those riding in cars are in vehicles that weigh at least 4,000 pounds on average and are equipped with seat belts and airbags to keep them safe.

Even bicyclists use helmets to protect themselves. Meanwhile, in most pedestrian accidents, pedestrians are utterly defenseless and susceptible in the event of someone else’s irresponsibility.

Pedestrians now account for a sizable proportion of traffic deaths over the last 33 years. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the United States climbed by 27% between 2007 and 2016, while other traffic-related deaths declined by 14%.

Negligent/distracted driving, speeding, and drivers failing to yield to pedestrians are common causes of pedestrian accidents.
