A head-on accident killed one person and wounded two more on Highway 12 on Monday afternoon, September 12, 2022.
Authorities were called to the scene at approximately 2:34 p.m., just east of Nuns Canyon Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), an eastbound Mercedes-Benz car collided with a westbound Subaru Outback on SR-12.
The medical responders pronounced the Subaru driver dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. However, officials have not yet released his identity.
Meanwhile, a 39-year-old male passenger was sent to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The Mercedes driver was transferred to the same hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The collision is to be further investigated.
Head-On Accident Statistics
All road accidents are terrifying, but being hit head-on by another car is especially distressing. These are some of the most dangerous mishaps, resulting in severe injuries or even death. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recorded a 58% fatality rate for head-on collisions in 2017.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, around 5,000 head-on accidents occurred in the United States in 2018. In 2018, this accounted for approximately 2% of all road accidents.
One way to reduce the risk of a head-on collision is to avoid driving in the left lane except when passing another vehicle. This is because many head-on collisions occur when one driver crosses over into oncoming traffic.
By staying in the right lane, you can help to prevent this type of accident. In addition, always be aware of your surroundings and never assume that other drivers will yield the right of way.
