Car Accident Statistics

In 2023, roughly 44,762 people died in motor vehicle crashes across the United States, representing a 3 percent decrease from 2022. This continues a downward trend following a 2 percent drop from 2021 to 2022, after a sharp 20 percent increase in traffic deaths between 2019 and 2021.

Looking at the long-term perspective, traffic fatality rates have improved considerably. In 1913, about 4,200 deaths occurred among 1.3 million vehicles, or 33 deaths per 10,000 vehicles. By 2023, with around 285 million vehicles on U.S. roads, the fatality rate had fallen to approximately 1.57 deaths per 10,000 vehicles, a 95 percent reduction.

Even with more people driving in 2023, the risk of dying in a crash declined. Total miles driven increased by 1.6 percent, registered vehicles rose 0.4 percent, and the population grew 0.5 percent. Despite these increases, fatalities per mile, per vehicle, and per person all went down. The mileage-based death rate dropped 4.2 percent, the vehicle-based rate fell 3.1 percent, and the population-based rate decreased 3.2 percent.

Nonfatal injuries remain a significant concern. In 2022, an estimated 5.1 million people were injured in motor vehicle crashes, resulting in an economic cost of about $513.8 billion, including medical expenses, lost income, and property damage.
