Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcyclists continue to face a much higher risk of death in crashes compared to drivers of other vehicles. In 2021, they accounted for 13.8% of all traffic fatalities, even though motorcycles represented only 3.5% of registered vehicles and 0.6% of total miles traveled.

That year, about 5,932 motorcyclists were killed in crashes across the United States, including 565 in California. Compared to 2020, fatalities increased by 7.7% nationwide and 2.9% in California. These figures show that motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable road users and underscore the importance of continued safety awareness and responsible riding practices.
