Truck Accident Statistics
Crashes involving large trucks continue to pose serious risks, particularly for people traveling in smaller vehicles. Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shows that most fatalities in these crashes occur among occupants of passenger vehicles. Large trucks can weigh 20 to 30 times more than a typical car and often have higher ground clearance, which increases the chance of underride collisions.
In 2023, an estimated 4,354 people were killed in crashes involving large trucks. Of these fatalities, 16% were truck occupants, 65% were people in passenger vehicles, and 17% were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists. Compared to 2009, when truck-related deaths were at their lowest since 1975, total fatalities in 2023 were 38% higher, and deaths among truck occupants rose by 58%.
These statistics show the ongoing dangers that large trucks present to other road users and emphasize the need for continued safety improvements and awareness on U.S. roads.
