Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian accidents frequently result in serious injuries that can result in long-term disability and, in the worst cases, even death. Head trauma, such as concussions or brain bleeds and traumatic brain injuries, are among the most common injuries sustained by pedestrians in accidents. This is not surprising as pedestrians are more exposed to the dangers on the road than passengers of private vehicles and motorcycle riders.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, approximately 6,227 pedestrians were killed in the United States in 2018, a 250 increase from the previous year. California is one of the leading states when it comes to pedestrian accident cases. The pedestrian fatality rate in California is almost 25% higher than the national average.

In 2018, 893 pedestrians were killed while 14,000 people were injured in California alone. Los Angeles County is the most dangerous county in the country for pedestrians, with nearly double the number of pedestrians killed as the next highest county.
