[07-24-2025] Alameda County, CA – Worker Dies After Falling From Scaffolding In South Berkeley

A worker died after falling from scaffolding at a construction site at Sylvia Mendez Elementary School in South Berkeley on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

The incident occurred around 12:50 p.m., when the worker fell approximately 30 feet onto concrete below. The Berkeley Fire Department rushed to the scene at 2840 Ellsworth St. and transported the worker, identified as 41-year-old Jonathan G. of Sacramento, to Highland Hospital with a trauma activation.

Although he was able to speak on the way to the hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.

The Berkeley Unified School District confirmed the worker was a subcontractor involved in the ongoing renovation project. The district shared their condolences and expressed their thoughts for the worker’s family and construction crew.

No students or staff were on site at the time of the accident, as the school is closed due to construction.

Berkeley police and Cal/OSHA are conducting separate investigations into the fatal accident.
