A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was hurt after a major traffic accident on 10 Freeway on Monday morning, March 29.
The accident transpired at approximately 7:19 a.m. in the westbound lanes of 10 Freeway between Arlington Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard.
The officer was initially responding to a call about a man walking on the freeway. The man was walking along the freeway’s center divider west of the Arlington Avenue exit.
The CHP officer got out of her vehicle and attempted to stop the man. The man ignored her and jumped through the center divider wall, then ran towards the eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway.
The officer then chased after the man to try to catch him. But as she was chasing him, the officer was suddenly struck by a passing GMC Yukon in the #1 lane of the eastbound freeway.
The officer was seriously injured from the accident. She was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center for treatment. The pedestrian that the officer was chasing was taken into custody by local authorities. No arrests have been made at the moment. The accident is currently under investigation.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian accidents often result in serious injuries that may lead to permanent disability and sometimes even death. Common injuries resulting from pedestrian accidents are head trauma like concussions or brain bleeds and traumatic brain injuries. This fact is not surprising as pedestrians are more exposed to the dangers on the road compared to passengers of private vehicles and motorcycle riders.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, approximately 6,227 pedestrians were killed in the U.S. back in 2018, a 250 increase from the previous year.
According to the most recent government statistics on pedestrian safety, Los Angeles County is the most dangerous county in the country for pedestrians, with nearly double the number of pedestrians killed as the next highest county. Pedestrian accidents are typically caused by distracted driving, speeding, intoxicated drivers, and drivers failing to yield the right way.
