Pasadena, California Police Issue 100+ Citations During Special Bike & Pedestrian Traffic Enforcement Program Friday

Table of Contents
Friday’s program netted a total of 107 citations, 85 of which were for dangerous driving. 17 pedestrians were issued citations along with five bicyclists. Three motorists were found to be driving without a valid driver’s license.

On Friday, May 24th, 2019 officers assigned for the Pasadena Police Department Traffic Section including motorcycle officers known for escorting floats down Colorado Blvd. during the world-famous Rose Parade conducted a bicycle and pedestrian safety traffic enforcement campaign throughout the Crown City. Officers were on the lookout for dangerous driving behaviors hazardous to bicyclists, including speeding, red light violations, right-of-way violations, and other violations that lead to traffic accidents.

The Traffic Section, which is made up of a Lieutenant, two Sergeants, thirteen motorcycle officers, a community service officer, and an office manager, is the primary unit at the police department that monitors traffic safety in the city of Pasadena, CA.

The 16 motorcycle officers issue citations, occasional warnings, respond to car accidents, and handle traffic safety programs such as the one conducted on Friday.

What Makes Pedestrian Accidents Different Than Other Types of Accidents?

Pedestrian accidents are unlike other types of accidents just because pedestrians have no protection in the case of an accident. Those who are riding in cars are in vehicles that weigh an average of at least 4,000 pounds and have not only seat belts but airbags to protect them. Even bicyclists typically have helmets to protect them. Meanwhile, pedestrians are completely defenseless and vulnerable in the event of someone else’s negligence in the circumstances in which most pedestrian accidents occur.

Officers have also been looking for bicyclists and pedestrians failing to stick to the rules of the road.

These behaviors can be quite dangerous and contribute to injury collisions each year. Officers conducted enforcement at various locations during the program, which ran from 6 a.m. 2 p.m.”Many people in Pasadena walk or use a bicycle as a primary means of transportation. As always, a majority of our enforcement efforts today focused on locations suggested to us by community members,” said Traffic Department Lieutenant Mark Goodman. “We appreciate the community’s input to help us focus our efforts on locations where traffic safety is a concern.”

Funding for bicycle safety enforcement is provided with a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The City of Pasadena urges residents to stay connected with them by visiting https://www.cityofpasadena.net

Common bike accident injuries include broken bones, road rash, head and brain injuries, crush injuries, and internal organ damage.
