Car Accident Statistics
The United States has some of the highest traffic-related death rates per million people. The number of deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) peaked in 2016 but gradually fell to 1.11 by 2019, showing some progress in road safety.
However, traffic fatalities rose again in 2020, reaching levels not seen since 2016. This increase coincided with the partial reopening of states after COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. Most deaths involved people in cars and light trucks, though motorcyclists still accounted for a significant share of road fatalities.
When examining non-fatal crashes, drivers and passengers in vehicles sustained the most injuries. This aligns with the widespread use of cars and light trucks, which are far more common than motorcycles or bicycles.
From 2015 to 2016, motor vehicle injuries increased sharply, followed by a decline in 2017. Injury numbers then remained relatively stable through 2019. Despite these fluctuations, the large number of vehicles on U.S. roads continues to make traffic injuries a major public safety concern.
