Car Accident Fatalities by State

The state with the highest number of fatalities due to car accidents will vary every year. It is generally known that states with more people and roads will experience more car accidents and fatalities annually. Urban areas will also have more dangerous roads and more dangerous driving conditions.

We also see correlations between the states with the highest numbers of fatalities having high DUI rates as well. In 2019, Texas had the most car accidents than any other state in the United States. It also had the most DUIs, and fatalities by DUIs.

The top 10 states for car accidents in 2019 were:

top 10 states for car accidents in 2019

Other facts that connect to car accidents by the state include the types of accidents that happened. Alaska is home to the highest percentage of accidents involving large vehicles (such as SUVs and pickup trucks) that resulted in fatalities. At the same time, Alaska has one of the fewest numbers of accidents involving cars.

Vermont has opposite numbers, with a high percentage of accidents related to fatalities involving cars but a low percentage of deaths of all accidents with SUVs and pickup trucks. Hawaii has a low number of fatalities with any kind of vehicle but a high percentage of accidents that resulted in accidents involving pedestrians.

Washington D.C. also has a high percentage of total car accidents resulting in fatalities involving pedestrians. Delaware, New York, and Florida have a high percentage of accidents in car accidents that involve fatalities and bicyclists.

California is number two on the list of the highest number of car accidents overall in the United States in 2019. That is an alarming number. It is not just about the state having more people. They are also high on the list of the percentage of car accidents that are DUIs.

DUIs in the United States

DUIs fatalities in the United States - Ak Blog

Drinking and driving is deadly in the United States, to the timing of one America dead every 52 minutes. In 2019, 10,142 Americans died as a result of drinking and driving. Not every DUI fatality was caused by that driver drinking. Many fatalities resulting from drinking and driving were caused by a drunk driver that left a scene without injury.

In 2018, there were 1,001,329 arrests for drinking and driving. Drinking and driving is a big problem in every state. Approximately 29 percent of deaths in a car accident in the United States in 2018 were caused by impaired driving. That is almost one death from every third crash in America. Every one of those fatalities is a wrongful death.

Some research indicates that the north-central section of the United States has the worst record for drinking and driving. Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota have very high DUI rates.

Montana and Wyoming see a high number of fatalities, while the Dakotas see a high number of arrests. Almost half of the traffic fatalities in Montana were caused by drinking and driving.

The states with the deadliest problems are in the south, with Texas and California ranking in the top for drunk driving deaths. The states that are in the northeast have the lowest problems with DUIs. West Virginia and Kentucky have a low number of DUI fatalities, but they have high arrest numbers for DUIs.

The top 3 states with DUI deaths are:

  • Texas – 1,439 deaths accounting for 40 percent of all traffic fatalities
  • California – 1,069 deaths accounting for 30 percent of all traffic fatalities
  • Montana – 79 deaths accounting for 43 percent of all traffic fatalities

The states with the lowest number of DUI fatalities are:

  • Kentucky – 137 deaths accounting for 19 percent of DUI fatalities
  • West Virginia – 57 deaths accounting for 19 percent of DUI fatalities
