Fatal Semi-Truck Accident Statistics

Semi-trucks are an important part of the economy. The United States counts on its trucking industry to deliver massive quantities of goods annually. Unfortunately, driving alongside big rigs can be quite risky for other motorists on the road.

Compared to other types of crashes, semi-truck accidents tend to be more deadly. Due to the immense size difference between a big rig and other vehicles on the road, big rig accidents often result in serious injury or death.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the fatality rate of big rig trucks has increased by 30 percent since 2009. In 2017 alone, there were 4,102 fatal traffic accidents involving a tractor-trailer. Semi-truck accidents occur due to a variety of reasons including, loss of control, a blowout, a failure of the vehicle or the truck itself, excessive speed, lane drifting, and bad truck maneuvering.
