Front Crash Prevention Slashes Rear-End Crashes

Technology is constantly evolving. Often, advances in technology make us safer. As traffic increases year after year, the roads must be made safer. One technological advancement that keeps drivers safe is a front-crash prevention system.

The system uses cameras, radar, and other sensors to monitor the road in front of the vehicle. A front-crash prevention system reduces rear-end accidents on the highway. One study showed that since the use of front-crash prevention systems began, rear-end traffic accidents decreased by 20%.

A front-crash prevention system and a vehicle’s auto brake system work in tandem. The use of both devices makes traveling on the road much safer. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study found that a combination of the auto brake system and the front-crash prevention system prevented 700,000 police-reported rear-end crashes in 2013, lowering the number of rear-end crashes by 13%.

Front-Crash Prevention Systems Help Prevent Car Crash Injuries

Fewer car crashes mean fewer injuries. Again, technology is making our lives better. Rear-end collisions lead to soft tissue injuries. Soft tissue injuries are injuries to the body’s tissues and tend not to appear on X-rays. These types of injuries usually heal with proper treatment and time. However, although soft tissue injuries are not apparent, they can still stop people from conducting daily life activities.

Examples of soft tissue injuries include:

  • Whiplash
  • Bruises
  • Concussion
  • Muscle strains
  • Muscle sprains

The use of technology can prevent many car accident victims from becoming injured if auto brake systems and front-crash prevention systems are combined. Drivers would not miss work or income and would maintain productivity.

An experienced car accident lawyer can help accident victims regain their lives after being involved in an accident. Whether you have suffered a soft tissue injury or a catastrophic one because of another driver’s carelessness, Our firm is here to help. Advances in Front-Crash Prevention Systems

Advances in Front-Crash Prevention Systems

More manufacturers are installing a front-crash prevention system as a factory setting, but many new cars still offer the system as optional equipment. However, more manufacturers see the benefits of installing front-crash prevention systems as an industry standard.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has announced a joint initiative to make auto brake systems and front-crash prevention systems the industry standard. It seems that the emerging trend is for a front-crash prevention system to be installed in all newly manufactured vehicles. The entities seem to see the safety benefits of having both systems work in tandem.

Car manufacturers have paid close attention to a recent joint study by the National Highway Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety that proves the safety benefits of automatically having both systems installed in vehicles as an industry standard.

Results of Recent Study Regarding Benefits of Combining Front-Crash Prevention and Auto Brake Systems

The subject of the National Highway Traffic Safety and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety joint study reviewed police-reported rear-end crashes in 22 states from 2010 through 2014. The study compared vehicles with the optional front-crash prevention system installed and identical model vehicles without an installed front-crash prevention system. The study also followed the effect of installing an auto brake system in the vehicles used.

The results showed a reduction in the accident rate and a reduction in injury claims stemming from car accidents were both significantly related to using the front-crash prevention system. The study showed that each system alone reduced rear-end crashes. Cars with only the front-crash prevention system installed reduced police-reported rear-end crashes by 23%.

Benefits of Combining Front-Crash Prevention and Auto Brake SystemsThe study found that the auto brake system dramatically reduced the number of reported rear-end crashes with injuries. The rate of rear-end crashes with damage decreased by 42% in the model vehicles that were studied.

The study showed a benefit to having either safety system installed in the car, whether a front-crash prevention system or an auto brake system. Vehicles with both auto brake systems and front-crash prevention systems installed reduced the rate of police-reported rear-end collisions by 39%.

City Safety Installed in Volvos

The study reviewed the City Safety system. City Safety is an auto brake system installed in Volvos. City Safety is designed to reduce rear-end accidents at low speeds. The system is intended to reduce the amount of police-reported rear-end accidents when the vehicle is traveling at 30 mph or slower. Study vehicles used a version of City Safety that operated at 19 mph.

None of the comparison vehicles in the City Safety system study had an additional auto brake system installed. The study found that the use of Volvo’s City Safety auto brake system reduced the number of police-reported rear-end crashes by 41%.

The study reviewed the additional variable of the speed limit and the effectiveness of the City Safety system. The study initially used Volvos with a City Safety system that worked up to speeds of 19 mph. The study found that independent of the change in the rate of speed, the City Safety system decreased the incidence of rear-end crashes by 54%.

The City Safety system was also found to be most effective on roads with speed limits of 40-45 mph in areas with congested traffic flow.
