Steps To Take After A Bicycle Accident

If you’ve been involved in a bicycle accident, especially one involving a vehicle, it’s important to take the right steps to protect your health and legal rights. Our accident lawyers recommend the following actions after a bicycle incident:

  1. Seek medical attention immediately, even if you don’t feel seriously injured. Bicycle accidents can cause internal injuries or conditions that may not show up right away, and a medical record is essential for your health and any future legal claims.
  2. Document the scene by taking clear, detailed photos of your injuries, the location of the accident, and any damage to your bicycle or nearby objects. This evidence can be valuable for your claim.
  3. Write down everything you remember about the incident. Be sure to note the time, location, weather conditions, and how the accident occurred. A detailed account will help preserve important details for later use.
  4. Gather witness information. If there were any witnesses, collect their contact details. Witness statements can play a key role in supporting your case.
  5. Obtain a copy of the police report or the report number from the responding officers. This official document may contain crucial information about the accident and any ongoing investigation.
  6. Avoid discussing the accident with others on social media or insurance adjusters before consulting with a lawyer. What you say could potentially affect your case.
  7. Contact our Santa Rosa bicycle accident lawyers for guidance. We can help explain your legal rights and assist you with navigating the next steps.

Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to the 2023 SafeTREC Traffic Safety Facts on Bicycle Safety, in 2021, 966 bicyclists were killed in motor vehicle crashes across the United States. In California, 125 bicyclists lost their lives in similar incidents that year. While bicyclist fatalities nationally increased by 1.9 percent from 2020 to 2021, California saw a decrease of 8.8 percent in the same period. This reduction in fatalities within the state may indicate the effectiveness of safety measures or public awareness campaigns, but the overall numbers still highlight the significant risks faced by cyclists on the road.
