What To Do After A DUI Accident
Knowing the right steps to take after a DUI accident is crucial in protecting your health, legal rights, and ability to seek compensation. Here’s what we recommend doing following the crash:
- Assess For Injuries And Seek Medical Help
If you’re able to, check yourself and others for injuries and call for medical assistance immediately. Even if you don’t feel injured, some injuries, like internal damage or soft tissue injuries, may not be visible right away. It’s important to have a medical professional evaluate your condition to ensure your safety and document any injuries. - Call The Police
Report the accident to the police as soon as possible. They will investigate the crash and determine if the other driver was under the influence. The police will document the scene and write an official report, which is essential for insurance claims and legal action. - Report The Accident To Your Insurance Company
Notify your insurance provider about the accident right away. Provide them with all the necessary details and be honest about the incident. Your insurer will assist you with the claims process and help resolve any issues that may arise from the accident. - Consult With A Lawyer
Contact an attorney with experience in DUI accidents. A lawyer can help explain your legal rights, assess the details of your case, and guide you through the process of seeking compensation for medical bills, vehicle damage, and any other losses you may have suffered.
DUI Accident Statistics
In 2022, crashes caused by alcohol impairment led to 13,524 deaths across the U.S., with California accounting for 1,479 of those deaths. While the number of alcohol-related fatalities dropped slightly by 0.7% across the country from 2021 to 2022, California actually saw a 1.8% increase in alcohol-related deaths during the same time. These numbers show that impaired driving continues to be a serious problem, and there is still a need to work harder to prevent accidents and deaths caused by alcohol.
