Steps To Take After A Car Accident

In the aftermath of a car accident, especially when multiple vehicles are involved, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Taking the right steps can help protect your health, your rights, and your ability to recover from the situation.

  1. Make Safety Your First Priority
Check yourself and others for injuries. Call 911 if medical attention is needed. If the vehicles are creating a hazard and it’s safe to move them, do so carefully.
  2. Call Law Enforcement
Always contact the police after a collision, particularly in situations involving multiple vehicles or serious damage. A formal accident report provides a clear and official account of the incident.
  3. Exchange Information With Others Involved
Obtain names, phone numbers, insurance details, and license plate numbers from all drivers. If there are witnesses nearby, ask for their contact information as well.
  4. Take Photos And Notes
Document the scene thoroughly. Photos of vehicle damage, road conditions, and your injuries (if any) can help clarify what happened later on.
  5. Get Medical Attention Promptly
Even if you don’t feel injured, it’s wise to see a doctor. Some injuries may not show symptoms right away, especially in high-impact or multi-vehicle crashes.
  6. Inform Your Insurance Company
Notify your insurer as soon as possible. Share the facts clearly and avoid making assumptions about what caused the crash or who was responsible.
  7. Consider Speaking With A Car Accident Lawyer
Legal guidance can be especially helpful when the accident involves multiple vehicles or serious injuries. A lawyer can explain your options and help you understand how to move forward with confidence.

Car Accident Statistics

The United States has a very high number of cars and drivers on the road. By late 2021, almost 284 million vehicles were being used across the country. This means millions of people are driving every day.

Back in 2019, over 228 million people had a valid driver’s license. With so many vehicles and drivers, traffic can get crowded. When roads are busy, the chances of accidents increase.

In 2019 alone, about 12.15 million vehicles were involved in crashes in the United States. Most of these were regular passenger cars, which are the type most people drive.

Experts think that the number of traffic accidents per million people will slowly go down in the next few years. By 2025, there may be just over 7,100 crashes per one million people. The number of people who die in traffic accidents is also expected to decrease, but not as quickly.
