Car Accident Statistics

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, deaths from motor vehicle crashes decreased by nearly 11% in 2023, from 4,539 in 2022 to 4,061. The Mileage Death Rate (MDR), which measures fatalities per 100 million miles traveled, also fell from 1.34 to 1.26, a 6% reduction. This suggests that, on average, the risk of dying per mile driven decreased, despite Californians collectively traveling millions of miles.

Alcohol-impaired driving continues to contribute to traffic fatalities, although there was a slight improvement in 2023. Deaths involving drivers or motorcyclists with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher declined by 4.5%, from 1,419 in 2022 to 1,355. Drug-impaired driving remains a concern as well. In 2021, data showed that over half of tested drivers killed in crashes (50.3%) had traces of legal or illegal drugs in their system, highlighting the ongoing risks from substance use while driving.

Occupant protection also showed progress. Fatalities among unrestrained passengers in all seating positions dropped by 8.6%, from 853 in 2022 to 780 in 2023, indicating that seatbelts continue to save lives. These statistics show that California has made measurable progress in road safety, though alcohol and drug-impaired driving remain significant challenges.
