What To Do After A Hit-And-Run
If you are hurt in an accident and the driver leaves the scene, you may have a much better chance of obtaining compensation if you take the steps listed below. These steps not only help the cops find and identify the driver, but they also help your injury claim. If you are still able to do so, some things you should do are:
- Go to a safe place. You should try to move your car or yourself to a safe place to prevent more accidents or injuries.
- Stay on the scene and make sure everyone is safe. Check yourself and other people for injuries. Keep your cool, and don’t take the blame.
- Get as much information as you can from where the accident happened. Based on your situation, you might be able to get the car’s make, model, color, and license plate number.
- Call the authorities. Telling the police about the accident as soon as possible can help them arrest the driver more quickly. The cops will also write down what happened in an official record that can help you when you file a claim later on.
- Get the witnesses’ names and contact details so you can reach them. They can back up what you say and confirm what happened.
- See a doctor right away to make sure you are not hurt. When you go to the doctor, a record of your injuries is also made. You need to do what your doctor tells you to do.
- Tell your insurance company. Stick to the facts and don’t point out or admit fault. If you don’t have a lawyer, you should never take a settlement deal or give a recorded statement.
