What To Do After A Pedestrian Accident

Being involved in or witnessing a pedestrian accident can be overwhelming. Whether you are the injured person or someone close to them, knowing the right steps to take can help protect health, rights, and future decisions.

  1. Call For Emergency Help
Immediately dial 911 so medical assistance and law enforcement can respond to the scene. Even if injuries are not visible at first, it is important to be evaluated by professionals.
  2. Stay At The Scene And Cooperate With Authorities
Wait for the police to arrive and give a clear account of what happened if you are able. If you are a witness or family member, you may be asked to provide details that can assist in the investigation.
  3. Gather And Preserve Information
If it is safe to do so, collect the name and contact information of the driver, vehicle details, and any witnesses. Photographs of the location, traffic signs, or debris can also be helpful.
  4. Follow Up On Medical Care
Even after initial treatment, continued medical care is often needed. Keep records of hospital visits, tests, prescriptions, and doctor instructions. These details may become important later on.
  5. Keep A Record Of What Happened
As soon as possible, write down everything you remember about the event. This includes the time, place, lighting, and traffic conditions. If someone is assisting you, they can help organize these notes.
  6. Consult a Pedestrian Accident Attorney
A lawyer can help explain what information is important to collect and how to proceed under California law. They may assist in reviewing official reports, identifying available evidence, and providing guidance based on your specific circumstances.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrians are people who walk along roads or cross streets. Unlike people in cars, they do not have the same level of protection, which makes them more likely to get hurt in a crash.

In 2022, there were 1,158 pedestrian deaths in California. This was a small decrease of 1.8 percent compared to the number of deaths in 2021. Even though the number went down slightly, pedestrian safety is still a serious concern. People walking on or near roads face many dangers every day, and these numbers show that more work is needed to make streets safer for everyone.
