Steps To Take After A Pedestrian Accident

A pedestrian accident can result in serious injuries or even fatalities, and it can be overwhelming for both the victims and their families. Knowing the right steps to take after such an incident can help preserve your rights and ensure that the legal process goes smoothly.

  1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention
If you or a loved one is injured in a pedestrian accident, it is crucial to seek medical care right away. Even if injuries seem minor, prompt medical attention can identify any underlying issues and provide important documentation for future legal or insurance claims.
  2. Contact Law Enforcement And Obtain The Accident Report
Itโ€™s important that law enforcement is called to the scene. A police report will contain critical information regarding the circumstances of the accident, the driverโ€™s actions, and potential contributing factors. Request a copy of the report once it’s available to ensure you have all the details for your case.
  3. Document The Scene And Gather Evidence
If you are physically able, gather as much information as possible about the accident. Take photographs of the scene, including the crosswalk, vehicle damage, and any visible injuries. Witness statements can also play a crucial role in supporting your claim. Collect their contact information if possible.
  4. Keep Track Of Medical Records And Expenses
Save all medical records, hospital bills, and any documentation related to medical treatment. Also, document any costs associated with the accident, such as lost wages, transportation to medical appointments, or home care. This will help support your claim for compensation.
  5. Consult With A Pedestrian Accident Lawyer
Speaking with an experienced pedestrian accident lawyer can help you understand your legal rights and explore options for pursuing a claim. An attorney can assist with communicating with insurance companies, ensuring evidence is preserved, and guiding you through the process of seeking justice for the injuries or loss your family has suffered.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In 2022, a total of 7,522 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States. That means pedestrians made up about 18 percent of all traffic-related deaths that year. While this number is nearly the same as it was in 1975, there has been a sharp rise since 2009, when pedestrian deaths were at their lowest. Since then, the number of fatalities has gone up by 83 percent.

One major concern is the number of hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians. In 2022, 25 percent of all pedestrian deaths were caused by drivers who left the scene. This number has increased in recent years. From 2013 to 2019, hit-and-run cases made up about 20 percent of pedestrian fatalities. That number rose to 24 percent in 2020, and by 2022, it reached 25 percent.

These trends show that pedestrian safety is still a serious issue on U.S. roads, and hit-and-run crashes are becoming more common in fatal incidents.
