Pedestrian safety remains a growing concern across the United States. Recent data highlights the increasing risks faced by people traveling on foot, particularly in busy urban areas and high-traffic corridors.
In 2023, an estimated 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic collisions nationwide. These fatalities represented approximately 18 percent of all traffic-related deaths, underscoring the vulnerability of individuals outside of motor vehicles.
The long-term trend is also alarming. Since reaching a modern low in 2009, pedestrian fatalities have increased by roughly 78 percent. This sharp rise points to ongoing challenges in roadway safety, driver awareness, and infrastructure designed to protect those who walk or cross the street.
As cities and communities look for solutions, the data serves as a reminder of how devastating a single moment on the road can be for individuals and families. Improving safety measures and understanding the legal landscape may be key steps in helping reduce future harm.
