Car Accident Statistics

In 2023, Americans spent more time on the road, driving about 35.1 billion more miles than they did during the same period in 2022. This marked a 2.3 percent increase in total miles traveled.

Despite the increase in driving, traffic deaths continued to decline. From January through June 2023, an estimated 19,515 people were killed in car accidents across the United States. That number represents a 3.3 percent drop from the 20,190 deaths reported in the first half of 2022. It also marked the fifth consecutive period with a decrease in roadway fatalities.

The fatality rate also improved. In 2023, there were approximately 1.24 deaths for every 100 million miles driven, compared to the expected rate of 1.31. These trends suggest that road safety is gradually improving, even as more vehicles return to daily travel.
