A man was killed and another driver was arrested following a fiery wrong-way collision on Interstate 580 near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in Contra Costa County early Tuesday morning, August 12, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 1:40 a.m., just minutes after reports came in of a Range Rover traveling westbound in the eastbound far left lane. The SUV collided head-on with a Honda Civic east of the bridge.
Authorities identified the Honda driver as 29-year-old Alejandro C. of Petaluma. He died at the scene.
CHP said the Range Rover became engulfed in flames after the crash, and paramedics rescued its driver, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The driver, whose name has not been released, is suspected of DUI and will be taken into custody once medically cleared.
The crash remains under investigation.
