Car Accident Statistics

The United States ranks among the countries with the highest rates of traffic-related fatalities per one million people. The rate of traffic fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) peaked in 2016. However, it gradually dropped to 1.11 deaths per 100 million VMT by 2019, signaling some improvement in road safety.

Despite this decline, traffic fatalities spiked again in 2020, reaching the highest level since 2016. This increase was most noticeable as the country began to reopen after COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. By June 2020, most states had partially reopened, and fatalities started to rise again compared to the previous year. The majority of these fatalities involved vehicle occupants, excluding motorcyclists, who continued to account for a significant portion of road deaths.

In non-fatal crashes, drivers and vehicle passengers consistently recorded the highest number of injuries. This can be attributed to the widespread use of cars and light trucks in the United States, which are far more common than other private transportation methods like motorcycles or bicycles.

From 2015 to 2016, the total number of injuries in motor vehicle crashes saw a sharp increase. This rise was followed by a decline in 2017, and the numbers remained relatively stable through 2019. Despite these fluctuations, the trend of mass motorization in the U.S. continues to make traffic-related injuries a major public safety concern.
