Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In the first half of 2024, an estimated 3,304 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States, a 2.6 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2023. This represents 88 fewer deaths than the first six months of the previous year. Despite this slight decline, pedestrian fatalities remain much higher than in past years, with 1,072 more deaths than in 2014.

Early data from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), based on preliminary reports from State Highway Safety Offices, shows that pedestrian deaths in the first half of 2024 are 12 percent higher than in 2019 and 48 percent higher than in 2014. Analysis by Kyle Hickerson, Ph.D., of Westat, indicates that over the last decade, pedestrian deaths have increased nearly seven times faster than U.S. population growth, which rose by only 7 percent.

These statistics highlight the growing risks pedestrians face nationwide and emphasize the need for continued safety initiatives, public awareness campaigns, and preventive measures to reduce pedestrian fatalities.
