Car Accident Statistics

The United States has one of the largest numbers of vehicles in the world. By the third quarter of 2021, nearly 284 million vehicles were in use across the country, meaning a large number of people are driving every day.

As of 2019, more than 228.7 million people in the U.S. had a valid driverโ€™s license. With so many drivers and vehicles on the road, traffic can become heavy, which increases the risk of accidents.

In 2019, about 12.15 million vehicles were involved in crashes in the U.S., with over half of those being passenger cars, the type most commonly used for daily travel.

Experts predict that the number of road accidents per one million people will gradually decline in the coming years. By 2025, this figure is expected to be slightly above 7,100 accidents per million people. Traffic-related deaths are also expected to decrease, though at a slower rate.
