Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Motorcycle crashes remain a significant road safety concern in the United States. In 2021, roughly 5,932 motorcyclists died in traffic accidents nationwide. California accounted for 565 of these fatalities.

Fatalities increased nationally by 7.7 percent from 2020 to 2021, highlighting the ongoing risks riders face on U.S. roads. In California, the increase was smaller, at 2.9 percent, but still indicates the need for improved safety measures and awareness programs for motorcyclists.

Although motorcycles make up only a small portion of vehicles on the road, crashes involving them account for a disproportionately high number of traffic deaths. These accidents tend to be more severe because riders lack the protection of enclosed vehicles, emphasizing the importance of helmet use, safe riding practices, and targeted safety initiatives.
