Taking the right steps after a pedestrian accident can protect your health, legal rights, and ability to recover compensation. Our experienced attorneys recommend the following actions:
- Ensure Immediate Safety — If you or anyone else is injured, call 911 right away. If possible, move to a safe location to avoid further danger.
- Report The Incident — Contact law enforcement as soon as possible. A police report provides vital documentation that can support your injury claim.
- Gather Critical Evidence — If you’re able, take photos of the accident scene, your injuries, and any property damage. Exchange contact and insurance information with the driver and collect witness statements if possible.
- Seek Medical Attention — Even if you feel fine, get a thorough medical evaluation. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent, and medical records will be essential for your claim.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Pedestrian fatalities are increasing nationwide. This trend highlights the ongoing issue of pedestrian accidents and their impact on public safety. A 2023 report from the Safe Transportation Research and Education Center shows that in 2021, 20 pedestrians died each day in car crashes. This led to 7,388 deaths, making up 17% of all traffic fatalities.
While pedestrian deaths in California decreased by 13% in 2024 from 2023, the per capita fatality rate remained higher than the national average, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). There were 439 pedestrian deaths from January to June 2024, a 13% drop from 504 deaths in the same period in 2023. This was the lowest first-half number since 2019. Despite this, California still recorded 1.1 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents, higher than the national average of 0.97.
In addition, pedestrian deaths have doubled over the past decade, nearly seven times faster than population growth. Urban areas remain particularly dangerous, with most fatalities occurring on high-traffic arterial roads. In order to prevent further pedestrian deaths, it is imperative to enhance infrastructure, improve lighting and visibility, and strengthen pedestrian safety measures.
